Online teaching is trending nowadays.

Experts everywhere have to deal with it, and have to adapt to include it in their strategies to deliver their knowledge to their fans.

Responding to the requests we had from our readers, we will be here today to help online teachers and instructors to  pick their most important part of their work environment.

In this post, and before moving to the best laptops for online teaching, we will be discussing the reasons as to why choosing the correct laptop for online teaching is crucial and how it will affect your work as well as your communication with your students or teachers. It is best to look at facts before opinions.

When choosing a product that is going to be of utmost importance in your life, you need to take certain things into consideration, such as the facts backing these products.

When you go to a shop or even when shopping online, most of people, or websites selling the product are out to make money and not to satisfy your needs. By this I mean they will recommend you a laptop that for example doesn’t have great sound quality (which is essential when teaching online), just so that you can buy an external microphone as well. Now you sit and think to yourself: “I can’t afford to spend $500-2000 on equipment like this, what do I do now?” Where am I going with this, you might be wondering.

Well to be honest there are many great laptops out there and I could recommend 100’s but there are only a few that include everything you should be looking for when online teaching is your preferred occupation, or you need to teach online very often in your career.

In the next section I will be telling you what to look for when buying a laptop for this reason and then I will provide a list of the top 13 laptops (fact based) to look at when considering taking up online teaching.

The post will help you know what to look for when selecting the best laptop for online teaching. You will also get the list of the best laptops for online teaching (including pros and cons and the important facts).

WHAT TO LOOK FOR WHEN SELECTING A LAPTOP FOR ONLINE TEACHING in 2019/2020:

CRITERIA WHEN BUYING A LAPTOP:

When It comes to selecting the right laptop for online teaching you don’t have to have the best of the best, it does not have to meet the standards of video gamers laptops that are maxed out in every possible way.

Let me start by listing all the things you should look for and I will explain how and why each of these things play an enormous role in choosing the perfect laptop for teaching online.

Screen size: When choosing the laptop of your choice the screen size will play a crucial role! Depending on what you are doing the screen size will also determine the weight, the bigger the screen the heavier the laptop. The 3 top sizes are as follows:

  • Screen size13” Screen – This size is the most preferred size when doing online teaching. This size is usually the cheaper option depending on the brand and the components that build up the certain laptop you may be choosing. The 13” screen is the most mobile, because it is the lightest and if you are traveling this will be the best option.
  • 15” Screen – This size is the middle size; I say this because it is not to big but also not to small. It is big enough to hold some of the most top-quality software but at the same time fit into a backpack and away you go. It also does not weigh too much and is a good size if you are traveling.
  • 17” Screen – This size is the largest, heaviest and the most expensive usually. Personally, I would only recommend the 17” laptop as a stay at home device. It is too big to fit into most backpacks and too heavy to carry around. The problem is the size, it is easier to use a smaller laptop to work at an airport or at a coffee shop, the 17” is usually a nice laptop to have at home for video editing and music production, not really for teaching online, unless you are in the field of video editing or graphic design, and prefer a very wide screen. But, I would prefer a desktop workstation, with a wide screen in such a case.

Processor: The processor speed definitely plays a huge role. What is a processor? Let me put it in simple terms; a processors job is telling all the other components in the computer what to do and when to do them, this is determined by the instructions given to it from the software running on the given computer.

RAM: This is the short-term memory of your laptop. RAM stands for Random access memory. If you are looking at having many open tabs running at once you should definitely look at the RAM of the chosen laptop. The higher the RAM the better obviously. I would recommend a minimum of 8 GB of RAM.

Hard Disk Drive (HDD) and Solid-State Drive (SSD): Your laptop comes with a certain amount of storage space; this is your laptops long term memory drive. When considering online teaching you will most definitely need a lot of space because you will be receiving student projects as well as having to create and send many tasks for them to complete. If you are a student, you will also require a laptop with a lot of space as you will receive lots of work from your teachers and will need to save everything for future reference. I would recommend a minimum of 128 GB of space.

Webcam: The webcam will only play a role if you are going to be doing live classes. Some laptops have a really good camera and can probably do the job on a novice level. Personally, I would suggest using an external camera for the best possible quality.

Audio: The audio quality plays a large role just like the webcam, but you can use it as is. If you are not looking at spending a large lump-sum of money on the equipment that you are purchasing I would suggest going for an external microphone, but this can be bridged if you have a set of headphones with a mic.

Laptop portsPorts: When it comes to the ports i.e. USB, Lan cable or even the AUX output/ input it is important that your laptop have these different ports.

  • USB – The USB port/ ports will determine whether you can plug-in multiple items at once. This comes down to personal preference yet again due to the fact that some people use their laptops as is where others like to plug in an external mouse or even an external keyboard.
  • Lan port – Although WIFI is super-fast nowadays a Lan cable is important if you want direct access to the internet with fast speed. If you are hosting a zoom class with your students, I will suggest you plug it in to the router with a Lan cable so that the response time is quick, and they will be able to hear you loud and clear with no errors.
  • AUX output/input – it is very important when hosting calls or recording audio books that you have a laptop with an AUX output/ input. This is where you plug your headphones with or without a mic in order to hear what students are saying or for them to hear what you are saying with no outside noises.
  • HDMI and VGA ports – are must these days, especially if there is a possibility of using external screen or a projector, if you can’t get both ports, never sacrifice the HDMI port.

Reviews: Look at what other people have to say about the laptop, its performance, its ability to work under pressure and the way it works; is it user friendly, does the laptop give problems after a while etc. It is always good to get a second opinion.

Research: I cannot stress this enough, do as much research as possible on the laptop before buying it. A laptop should last you on average about 5 years or so, so make sure you purchase the right one and are satisfied before going out and spending all that money. When doing online teaching the laptop is going to be your source of income and will hold a lot of information such as: tasks, student info, test scores and many other forms of documentation that you will use on a daily basis.
